Frances the Robin
By Roseanne Bennett and Pat Gillule
In the early summer of 2016 a college student named David saw a baby bird get hit by a car on a busy road in a small upstate New York town. He stopped and picked up the baby when he realized that it was still alive. He took the injured baby bird to his home and asked his Mom to help it live. David’s sister named the baby bird ‘Frances’. This is the story of Frances the Robin. Frances had to overcome the fear of being away from her family. She had to trust these strange beings to take good care of her. It was a frightening time for the baby bird, but she found her courage.
Frances the Robin teaches us that different isn’t a bad thing, and sometimes it is the very best thing. Frances and her new human family learned how to communicate and to solve problems. Her humans taught her how to do the things that her bird family would have taught her. They helped her get strong, they helped her explore her world, and they kept her safe from the cats who shared their home. Finally…they gave her the chance to fly free and rejoin the other robins just as she was always supposed to do.
The Gillule Family will always remember their summer with Frances the Robin…we’re pretty sure that Frances will always remember the family who took good care of her.
